Wikipedia introduces Rating System for English Language Articles

Did you check out the new ‘Article Feedback Tool‘ on Wikipedia? Yes, the long-awaited feature has finally been introduced for all the English language articles on Wikipedia. Wikipedia initiated the full-fledged deployment of article rating system on July 15, gradually introducing it at a rate of 3,70,000 articles per day. By now, all the English language articles on Wikipedia have a ‘Rate this page‘ feature on them.

What’s more… The Wikipedia article ratings data shall also be available for analysis under a Creative Commons license.

Why Wikipedia introduced an Article Rating feature?

  • Primarily, article feedback tool will help Wikipedia improve the quality of its articles.
  • To increase the engagement of Wikipedia users with the website – Typically Wikipedia users read an article, gather the information that they require and simple close the website. With the new article rating system, Wikipedia aims to let users get more involved with the website - initially by just rating the articles which takes less than 10 seconds and then over a period of time, encourage users to contribute to Wikipedia content.
  • Weigh the utility of articles based on the feedback - (a) To improvise the articles which have been rated high and (b) look in to the articles which have been rated poorly, and all this in real time.
This is how the Article Feedback Tool (AFT) looks like:

I believe article rating system is an amazing feature and it will help improvise the content of millions of articles published on Wikiepedia.. Good going Wiki!
